In Wednesday Kim’s series Heap up ashes (2020) the artist drops us deep within a Bosch inspired landscape of the subconscious, through which a young girl and her ghostly electric shadow carry a semi-translucent giant crustacean.
In the second part of the series, we continue our journey with Kim’s protagonists, this time travelling onwards under the menacing glow of a darkening sky. Up close we are able to see through the exoskeleton of the shrimp and can catch the hairs along each leg. Water droplets pass in front of the young girl’s face, whilst her cyberborg doppelganger’s illuminated red eyes are visible just behind.
Recalling North Korea’s 2016 threat to turn Seoul and Washington into a “heap of ashes” Kim’s series mixes a religious excess with a stark vision of humanity.
